    Authorizations for the transport of post-slaughter goods

    We have a fleet of trusted carriers, who hold authorizations in compliance with the regulations of the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009 of 21 October 2009 and Commission Regulation (EU) No 142/2011 of 25 February 2011, detailing health rules for the transport of animal by-products not intended for human consumption.

    What are category III animal origin goods?

    Animal by-products are defined in several ways:

    • Category III animal origin goods,
    • Post-consumer goods,
    • ABP – animal by-products.

    ABPs are divided into three categories (which also define the type of transport, potential use, and disposal method):

    Category 1 (cat.1) “for disposal only” includes particularly dangerous by-products that must be thermally disposed of.

    Category 2 (cat.2), “not for animal consumption,” includes high-risk wastes. This category includes manure and gastrointestinal contents, animals slaughtered to control disease epidemics, and other by-products not belonging to the other two categories (cat.1 and cat.3).

    Category 3 (cat.3) “not intended for human consumption” includes low-risk wastes. Our provided transport services for cat. 3 ABPs include, among others:

    • Inedible animal by-products such as hides, defatted bones, cracklings, hooves, horns, feathers;
    • Withdrawn foodstuffs of animal origin or containing animal products (former food);
    • Animal by-products, carcasses, and parts of carcasses from slaughterhouses, deemed fit for human consumption but not intended for it due to commercial reasons;
    • Carcasses and parts of carcasses from slaughterhouses not deemed fit for human consumption but showing no signs of disease transmissible to humans or animals;
    • Poultry and rabbit products;
    • Centrifuge sludge from milk processing;
    • Pet food or feed materials containing animal products not suitable for feeding due to commercial or production reasons but not posing a threat to human or animal health;
    • Aquatic animals and parts thereof, and ABPs from facilities processing aquatic animals;
    • Shells, crustacean shells;
    • Hatchery by-products;
    • Eggs and eggshells;

    Gastronomic wastes:

    • From international transport,
    • Intended for feeding certain animals,
    • Intended for processing via pressure sterilization,
    • Intended for biogas plants or composting.
    • In transporting category 3 animal origin goods, we have cooperated with the PetFood industry – animal feeds, as well as dairy plants. Many manufacturers of well-known and recognized brands have trusted us, who daily use our ABP transport services, including those of category 3.

    The European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) regarding the transport of category 3 animal by-products does not apply to, among others:

    • Entire wild animals (not suspected of infectious diseases);
    • Entire hunted animals (if collected after killing in accordance with DPM);
    • Raw milk and colostrum used on the farm of origin;
    • Crustacean and mollusk shells;
    • Gastronomic goods, except those intended for transport as cat. 3 ABPs, as specified in the last point of the previous section;
    • ABPs from ships;
    • Raw pet food from retail stores;
    • Raw pet food from on-farm slaughter.
    • Category 2 or category 3 – how to check the category of category 3 animal origin goods?

    The final decision on whether an animal by-product belongs to category 2 or 3 is made by a veterinarian inspecting the meat in a slaughterhouse based on risk analysis and pre- and post-slaughter examination.

    WHY IS THE APPROPRIATE TRANSPORT OF CATEGORY 3 ANIMAL ORIGIN GOODS IMPORTANT?

    The appropriate method of transporting category 3 animal origin goods is regulated by rules set out by, among others, the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC).

    The fundamental characteristic of category 3 animal origin goods is their high content of organic compounds. Waste from the processing of animal raw materials poses a serious environmental threat and should be transported and disposed of properly. Category 3 animal origin goods can create both sanitary and odor hazards (hydrogen sulfide, aldehydes, ammonia, or organic acids). Improper storage and transportation of category 3 animal by-products (ABP) can lead to the leakage of impurities and undecomposed fats, as well as salts containing chlorides, nitrates, and sulfates into the soil and groundwater.

    In our commitment to environmental conservation and the need to minimize the negative impact of improper transportation, storage, and disposal of these goods, we support eco-friendly actions defined in both EU and national regulations, not limited to transportation.

    Identification and Labeling of Transported Animal Origin Products

    European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) regulates not only the transportation of category 3 animal origin goods but also the storage of animal by-products. According to the legal basis, categories 1, 2, and 3 materials, as well as derivative products, should be stored separately, and their identification should be possible during collection and transport (unless they are mixed and destined for a lower category facility).

    Labeling of different categories of animal origin products Category I animal origin waste (and its processed products):

    • The label must be black and contain the phrase “for disposal only”.
    • Category II animal origin waste (other than manure and gastrointestinal contents) and its derivative products:
    • The label must be yellow and contain the phrase “not for animal consumption”.
    • For manure, the wording “manure”.
    • Category III animal origin waste (and derivative products):
    • The label must be green with a hint of blue (to distinctly stand out from other colors) and contain the phrase “not for human consumption”.
    • Transportation of ABP and derivative products between EU countries

    The transportation of category I, II, and III ABPs (and derivative products) within the European Union must be in packages, containers, or vehicles, which should bear a label with the appropriate category-specific phrase.

    We guarantee complete labeling of transport means.

    WHAT CAN CATEGORY III ANIMAL BY-PRODUCTS BE USED FOR?

    Post-consumer category 3 wastes find application in many areas of human activity and eco-friendly projects and solutions. In its Regulation, the European Union proposes new fields of exploitation for category 3 animal origin goods. New uses for animal by-products successfully apply in:

    • The chemical industry,
    • The fertilizer industry,
    • The leather industry,
    • The energy industry.

    Category III ABPs can be used as organic fertilizers and soil improvers (lime, manure, compost), feed (after appropriate treatment) for certain animal species, including many species kept in zoos and fur animals. Post-consumer category 3 wastes also work as fuel in the process of cement clinker burning or as an addition to fuels (biomass – after pressure sterilization).

    With changes in energy legislation, there’s growing interest in various types of biomass (derived from, e.g., category 3 animal origin goods), which constitutes a special energy source for local energy sectors. Biomass can also be used as a component mixed with other solid fuels (coal, peat) in combustion or gasification processes.

    Moreover, analyses of the elemental composition and physicochemical properties of technical fats obtained from category 3 animal origin goods confirm no ecological threat when thermally treating meat wastes.

    Some methods of processing ABPs include:

    • Pressure sterilization;
    • Alkaline hydrolysis process (cat.1, cat.2, cat.3);
    • High-pressure hydrolysis at high temperature (cat.2, cat.3);
    • Biogas production through high-pressure hydrolysis (cat.1, cat.2, cat.3) – biogas is gas obtained from biomass, especially from animal or plant waste processing installations, sewage treatment plants, and waste landfills;
    • Biodiesel production (cat.1, cat.2, cat.3) – biodiesel refers to both fatty acid methyl esters (FAME – pure biodiesel) and fuel blends with diesel oil to improve engine operation conditions;
    • Brooks gasification process (cat.2, cat.3);
    • Combustion of animal fat in a heating boiler (cat.1, cat.2, cat.3);
    • Thermomechanical production of biofuel (cat.3+ manure, gastrointestinal content).
