Transporting oversized loads, also known as out-of-gauge cargo, is a comprehensive process that requires special organization from the freight forwarder. Transporting such cargo generally involves the necessity of obtaining the required permits and requires the carrier to meet many additional criteria regulated by legal provisions.

When carrying out oversized transport, it is necessary to adjust the equipment and the transport architecture to the conditions stipulated in the legal provisions of the specific country. Polish standards stipulate that the total mass of the transport and the vehicle involved in the transport cannot exceed 42 tons in total, and the permissible width of the cargo is 2.5m. The maximum length of a tractor-trailer set together with a trailer is 16.5 meters, and the permissible height is 4 meters.

During the transport of oversized loads, escort vehicles are used, which not only signal such transport to other road users but also provide protection during a potential collision. We distinguish the following classes of oversized cargo:

• Standard, not exceeding a total mass of 25 tons – industrial equipment, machines, steel structures,
• Special – components and devices intended for the energy and mining industries,
• Large volume heavy loads,
  Heavy – intended for construction and road construction,
• Concentrated mass heavy loads – these loads are characterized by a high mass-to-volume ratio,
• Long loads – typical for the construction industry.

The valuation of transporting oversized loads is very complicated, as it assumes not only the calculation of distance but most importantly, in which countries the transport will take place. Every entity involved in the execution of such transport must meet specified conditions and have the appropriate permits.
